Sojourner before leaving the Mars Pathfinder

Sojourner. Mosaic image of the robotic Sojourner vehicle aboard the Mars Pathfinder on the surface of the " red planet". Sojourner has an Alpha-Proton X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) and a high-resolution camera to study rocks. The rover weighs about 9 kilogrammes, is 63 centimetres (cm) long and 48cm wide. It is powered by a solar panel which will allow for a few hours movement per day. An operator on Earth chooses Sojourners next destination, but the vehicle itself calculates the best route to take to get there. Image taken by the Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) on the day that it landed (Sol 1) on the surface of the " red planet" on 4 July 1997

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Sojourner rover before embarking on its groundbreaking journey across the mysterious terrain of Mars. The image, captured by the Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) on July 4,1997, portrays Sojourner aboard the Mars Pathfinder spacecraft as it rests upon the enigmatic "red planet". Equipped with an Alpha-Proton X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) and a high-resolution camera, this remarkable robotic vehicle is designed to meticulously study rocks and gather invaluable data about Martian geology. Weighing approximately 9 kilograms and measuring 63 centimeters in length and 48 centimeters in width, Sojourner's compact yet robust structure enables it to navigate through challenging terrains. Powered by a solar panel that allows for a few hours of movement per day, Sojourner relies on both human guidance from operators on Earth and its own intelligent calculations to determine the most optimal route towards its next destination. This fusion of human expertise and autonomous decision-making sets Sojourner apart as a pioneer in planetary exploration. As we gaze at this extraordinary snapshot from Science Photo Library's collection, we are reminded of humanity's insatiable curiosity to explore distant worlds. It serves as a testament to our relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our home planet while igniting wonder about what lies beyond our reach.
