Social feather duster worm

Social feather duster worms (Bispira brunnea). This polychaete worm lives in colonies, with each worm inhabiting a tube attached to coral or rock. The worms are all clones of the first worm to arrive at the site, which reproduces asexually to surround itself with identical worms. Due to this, it is also known as the cluster duster. It feeds by extending long radioles (pink) into the water to trap passing food particles. At the slightest hint of danger these are withdrawn rapidly into the tube. Photographed in the Bahamas

This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Social Feather Duster Worms (Bispira brunnea). These remarkable polychaete worms are found living in colonies, with each individual inhabiting a tube firmly attached to coral or rock formations. What makes these creatures truly fascinating is their ability to reproduce asexually, resulting in an entire colony of identical clones. However, at even the slightest hint of danger, these fragile appendages retract rapidly back into their protective tubes. Photographed against the picturesque backdrop of the Bahamas' underwater paradise, this image captures not only the intricate details of each worm but also highlights their collective existence within a thriving marine ecosystem.
