Snake on eggs

Young snake. Newly-hatched Malaysian pit viper (Calloselasma rhodostoma) on eggs. These snakes are bred for their venom, which contains an anti- coagulant drug. The drug, Ancrod, is being studied for use in treating stroke patients. It improves blood flow by reducing the amount of fibrinogen (a clotting protein) in blood plasma. Strokes occur when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off by a blockage or bleeding in the brain. They can lead to brain damage and are a leading cause of death. Ancrod may reduce the extent of brain damage and lower the mortality rate. Over 3000 snakes live at this facility, run by Knoll AG, a division of BASF Pharma, in Ludwigshafen, Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the delicate yet powerful presence of a young Malaysian pit viper, newly-hatched and coiled protectively around its eggs. These snakes are bred for their venom, which holds a remarkable secret - an anti-coagulant drug called Ancrod. The significance of this venom lies in its potential to revolutionize stroke treatment. Strokes, caused by blockages or bleeding in the brain, can result in devastating consequences such as brain damage and even death. However, scientists have discovered that Ancrod has the ability to improve blood flow by reducing fibrinogen levels within the blood plasma. This clotting protein reduction may significantly minimize brain damage and lower mortality rates among stroke patients. The snake farm responsible for housing over 3000 of these remarkable creatures is located within Knoll AG, a division of BASF Pharma in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Here at this facility dedicated to research and conservation efforts, these young reptiles thrive under careful observation. In this image's composition lies not only the beauty of nature but also hope for medical advancements that could save countless lives affected by strokes worldwide. As we marvel at the intricate patterns on the snake's skin and witness new life emerging from fragile eggs, let us recognize how interconnected our world truly is - where even venomous creatures hold secrets that may unlock breakthroughs in medicine.
