Skin sweat pore, SEM

Scanning electron micrograph of a sweat pore in skin from the palm of a mans hand. Like the opening to a deep cave, the sweat pore spirals down through the outer layer of the skin, or epidermis. It ends in a coiled sweat gland in the dermis or subcutaneous layers. The palm of the hand is one of the areas of the body richest in sweat glands. One quarter of the bodys heat loss is achieved by sweating. Magnification: x130 at 35mm size, x900 at 8x10-inch size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 2.50, page 40

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a sweat pore in the skin, captured through a scanning electron microscope. The image reveals an otherworldly sight resembling the entrance to a mysterious cave. Located on the palm of a man's hand, this particular sweat pore spirals down from the outer layer of skin, known as the epidermis, into the deeper dermis and subcutaneous layers where it connects with a coiled sweat gland. The palm is renowned for being one of the body's most abundant areas for sweat glands, playing a crucial role in regulating temperature. Sweating aids in cooling down our bodies and accounts for approximately one quarter of our heat loss mechanism. At magnifications reaching x130 at 35mm size or an astonishing x900 at 8x10-inch size, this photograph allows us to appreciate every minute detail present within this tiny structure. It serves as a reminder of how even seemingly insignificant elements can possess remarkable complexity when observed up close. Displayed prominently in Science Photo Library's collection titled "MICROCOSMOS" figure 2.50 on page 40 offers viewers an opportunity to delve into the fascinating world beneath our skin surface. This awe-inspiring image invites contemplation about human anatomy while highlighting both its scientific significance and visual allure.
