EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned Sir John Franklin, a distinguished British explorer whose name is forever etched in history. Born in Spilsby, Lincolnshire, Franklin's adventurous spirit led him to join the navy at a tender age of 14. However, it was his ill-fated expedition that truly solidified his legacy. In 1845, Franklin embarked on an audacious quest to discover the elusive Northwest Passage—a treacherous sea-route connecting Canada and the Arctic. Unfortunately, neither he nor his crew ever returned from this perilous journey. Their mysterious disappearance sparked numerous subsequent expeditions in search of answers. It wasn't until 1859 that remnants of their ship were discovered along with records detailing their tragic fate. The crew had been forced to abandon the vessel when it became trapped amidst unforgiving ice; none survived. This remarkable artwork published in the 1880s immortalizes Sir John Franklin's valiant efforts and serves as a poignant reminder of human resilience and exploration during Victorian times. With its vivid colors and intricate details, this illustration transports us back to an era where bravery knew no bounds.
