Sinai and Egypt seen from space shuttle STS-69
Egypt and Sinai from Space. Space shuttle view of Egypt and the Sinai peninsula, facing west. In the lower left is the Red Sea, which forks into the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba at its northern end. Sinai lies between the two gulfs. The dark band running across centre frame is the River Nile, which spreads out into the Nile Delta as it nears the Mediterranean. Cairo is located on the Nile just south of the Delta, but is not clearly visible here. The Suez Canal can be seen running between the Mediterranean and the western fork of the Red Sea. Photographed from Space Shuttle Endeavour during mission STS-69, which flew on 7- 18 September 1995

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken by the Space Shuttle Endeavour during mission STS-69 in September 1995, offers a breathtaking view of Egypt and the Sinai peninsula from space. The image showcases the remarkable landscape as seen from above, facing westward. In the lower left corner, we can observe the majestic Red Sea branching into two distinct gulfs: the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba at its northern end. Nestled between these two bodies of water lies the stunning Sinai peninsula. A prominent feature that cuts across the center frame is none other than Egypt's lifeline –the River Nile. Its dark band stands out against its surroundings as it meanders through this ancient land before fanning out into what is known as the fertile Nile Delta near its mouth on the Mediterranean coast. Although not clearly visible in this particular shot, Cairo, Egypt's bustling capital city, sits just south of this expansive delta. Moreover, one cannot miss spotting another significant man-made marvel captured within this photograph –the Suez Canal. This vital waterway connects both ends of Egypt; linking up with both sides of the Red Sea and providing a crucial trade route between Europe and Asia. Through this extraordinary snapshot provided by Science Photo Library, we are granted an awe-inspiring glimpse into Earth's natural wonders while showcasing our ability to explore and appreciate our planet from beyond its atmosphere.
