EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning shuttle photograph of the Middle East, captured by the earth-orbiting Atlantis during mission STS-37 in early April 1991. The image provides a breathtaking view of this ancient and historically significant region. In the upper left corner, we can observe the vast expanse of the eastern Mediterranean Sea, while to the right lies the northern Red Sea. The River Nile gracefully winds its way through a dark band of fertile land that stretches across Egypt, creating a stark contrast against the surrounding arid terrain. Separated from mainland Egypt by the Gulf of Suez is Sinai Peninsula, prominently featuring Mount Sinai itself on its rocky tip. At upper right, we witness how the Gulf of Aquaba acts as a natural border between Sinai and Saudi Arabia. A notable highlight within this mesmerizing composition is the Dead Sea positioned just above center frame. This unique body of water rests along both Israeli and Jordanian borders and stands out with its distinct turquoise hue amidst an otherwise earth-toned landscape. The significance of this photograph extends beyond its aesthetic appeal; it serves as an invaluable resource for Earth scientists studying various aspects such as geology, climate patterns, or even pollution caused by events like the Gulf War. Courtesy of Science Photo Library's extensive collection, this remarkable print allows us to appreciate our planet's beauty while also gaining insights into our ever-changing world from space exploration perspectives.
