Shrimp goby with its partner shrimp

Metallic shrimp goby (Amblyeleotris latifasciata) with its partner, an alpheid shrimp. This goby lives in a symbiotic association with the shrimp. The shrimp digs a burrow in which they both live. The shrimp is blind, however, and relies on the goby to know when it is safe to emerge to feed. It does this by keeping an antenna permanently in contact with the fish. The pair live on sandy seabeds around coral reefs in the tropical waters around South-East Asia. Photographed in Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible partnership between a Shrimp Goby and its partner, an Alpheid shrimp. The Metallic Shrimp Goby, scientifically known as Amblyeleotris latifasciata, relies on this symbiotic association to survive in the sandy seabeds surrounding coral reefs in Southeast Asia's tropical waters. In this remarkable image captured in Indonesia, we witness the unique bond between these two marine creatures. The Alpheid shrimp skillfully digs a burrow that serves as their shared home. However, due to its blindness, it heavily depends on the watchful eyes of the goby for protection against potential dangers. To ensure safety while feeding, the blind shrimp keeps one antenna constantly touching its vigilant fish companion. This physical connection allows them to communicate effectively and alerts the shrimp when it is safe to emerge from their burrow. The duo's harmonious existence exemplifies nature's intricate web of interdependence and cooperation. It highlights how different species can come together to support each other's survival in challenging environments like coral reefs. As you admire this mesmerizing photograph by Science Photo Library, let it serve as a reminder of the wonders that unfold beneath our oceans' surface – where biological partnerships flourish and fascinating symbiotic relationships thrive.
