Seyfert galaxy

Active galaxy. Coloured Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectrograph images of the active (Seyfert) galaxy NGC 4151, thought to contain a black hole. The images show emissions from oxygen gas at a wavelength of 4959 angstroms (495.9 nanometres, left) and 5007 angstroms (500.7nm, right). The emitting gas is found in knots which are being ejected from the galaxys nucleus at high speeds. This ejection occurs in two beams (not seen), one carrying gas towards us and one away from us. The active nucleus of this galaxy is powered by a super-massive black hole

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, a remarkable active galaxy believed to harbor a black hole at its core. The image, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope's spectrograph, presents a stunning display of colored emissions from oxygen gas. On the left side of the photograph, we observe emissions at a wavelength of 4959 angstroms (495.9 nanometers), while on the right side, emissions are depicted at 5007 angstroms (500.7nm). The mesmerizing aspect of this image lies in the presence of knots within the emitting gas that are being forcefully expelled from the galactic nucleus with immense velocity. Although not visible in this particular shot, these ejections occur in two distinct beams—one directed towards us and another away from us. At the heart of NGC 4151 resides an active nucleus fueled by an extraordinary super-massive black hole. This enigmatic phenomenon powers and influences various processes within this awe-inspiring galaxy. Science enthusiasts and astronomy aficionados will undoubtedly find themselves captivated by this visually striking portrayal captured through advanced imaging spectrometry techniques provided by STIS (Space Telescope Imaging Spectrometer). With its rich colors and intricate details, this print serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of unraveling cosmic mysteries and expanding our understanding of our vast universe.
