Sets of fingerprints

Sets of fingerprints, artwork from Dr Henry Fauldss Guide to Finger-print Identification, 1905. Faulds, a Scottish scientist, was an early developer of fingerprint analysis. Convinced that the patterns of ridges on fingertips were unique, he set about trying to develop a system of analysis. Shown here are prints from five individuals (a, b, c, d and e), made with (from left to right) the thumb, fore, middle and ring fingers of the right hand. Faulds describes them as Good smudges, done without supervision or training. Faulds believed the entire set of ten prints was needed to make an identification, which is one reason why his system of analysis was never used by the courts

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant milestone in the history of forensic science. Taken from Dr Henry Fauldss Guide to Finger-print Identification, 1905, this artwork highlights sets of fingerprints meticulously collected by the Scottish scientist himself. With unwavering conviction, Faulds believed that the intricate patterns of ridges on our fingertips were unique to each individual. Displayed here are prints from five individuals (a, b, c, d and e), carefully imprinted using ink on paper. The prints feature the thumb, forefinger, middle finger, and ring finger of their right hands. Despite being described as "Good smudges" these prints were created without any supervision or training. Faulds firmly advocated for utilizing all ten fingerprints to make accurate identifications—an approach that was not embraced by the courts at that time. This contributed to his system of analysis never gaining widespread recognition. As we delve into this monochrome image filled with historical significance and technological advancements of its era, we witness an essential chapter in fingerprint identification's evolution. These multiple sets of fingerprints symbolize both Faulds' groundbreaking research and his relentless pursuit to establish a reliable method for identifying individuals based on their unique patterns. This photograph serves as a testament to Faulds' invaluable contributions towards modern forensic science—a field that continues to rely heavily on fingerprint evidence for crime detection even today.
