Serpentine mine of blackberry pygmy moth C015 / 6235

Serpentine tunnels in a leaf of blackberry, Rubus fruticosus, made by the larva of the Blackberry pygmy moth (Golden pygmy moth ), Stigmella aurella. S. aurella is a micro-moth, with a wingspan of about 7mm, found throughout Southern Europe including England, and the Near East. Although common and widespread, the adult moth is rarely noticed during its flight period (summer ). Mined leaves by contrast are a striking feature of blackberry plants in winter. As a potential fruit crop pest, the moth is in practice of little commercial importance

Larva Blackberry Leaf Miner Rubus Fruticosus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate serpentine tunnels carved into a leaf of a blackberry plant, Rubus fruticosus, by the larva of the Blackberry pygmy moth (Golden pygmy moth), scientifically known as Stigmella aurella. Measuring only about 7mm in wingspan, this micro-moth can be found across Southern Europe including England and the Near East. While the adult Golden pygmy moth is rarely noticed during its flight period in summer, it leaves behind these striking mined leaves that become a prominent feature of blackberry plants during winter. The delicate tunnels etched on the leaf surface are an astonishing testament to nature's artistry. Although commonly found and widespread, this tiny moth holds little commercial importance as a potential fruit crop pest. However, its impact on blackberry plants cannot be overlooked. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image captured by Dr. Jeremy Burgess from Science Photo Library, we gain insight into the hidden world within our natural surroundings. Let us marvel at the wonders of nature encapsulated in this photograph – an exquisite portrayal of coexistence between flora and fauna.
