SEM of pollen grain

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain of the garden hollyhock, Althaea rosa. Its outer wall (exine) has a spiky structure. When the pollen grain, containing the male gametes, lands on the stigma of a flower of the same species, it germinates. A pollen tube grows from the pollen grain & down to the flowers ovaries. The ovules are then fertilised & a seed is formed. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size, x200 at 6x6cm size

Hollyhock Pollen Re Production Reproductive

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a pollen grain from the garden hollyhock, scientifically known as Althaea rosa. The false-color scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the astonishing details of this tiny reproductive structure. The outer wall, or exine, of the pollen grain is adorned with a spiky structure that adds to its visual allure. Pollen grains play a crucial role in plant reproduction as they contain male gametes. When these minuscule particles land on the stigma of a flower belonging to the same species, they initiate an extraordinary process. Germination occurs, and from within the pollen grain emerges a delicate tube known as a pollen tube. Intriguingly, this microscopic tube grows downwards towards the ovaries of the flower. Once it reaches its destination, fertilization takes place by uniting with ovules present in these ovaries. This union ultimately leads to seed formation. The magnification level used for capturing this image was x100 at 35mm size and x200 at 6x6cm size. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured nature's wonders through their lens once again – highlighting both botanical marvels and essential aspects of plant reproduction.
