SEM of lymphocytes in cortex of thymus

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the cortex of a thymus. The spheres are T-lymphocytes, white blood cells vital to the cell mediated resp- onse of the immune system. Their functions include tracking down & destroying antigens directly and summoning & directing the scavenging macrophages. The thymus is arranged in two distinct zones; the outer cortex and an inner medulla. Progenitor T cells are thought to arise in the bone marrow and seed the outer cortex of the thymus. The cells proliferate giving rise to immature T cells which become immunocompetent as they migrate from cortex to medulla. Magnification: x1000 at 6x7cm size

Cortex Immune System Lymphocyte Magnified Image Microscopic Photos Subjects T Lymphocyte Thymus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the cortex of a thymus, as seen through a false-color scanning electron microscope. The image reveals an array of spherical structures, each representing a T-lymphocyte - essential white blood cells that play a crucial role in the cell-mediated response of our immune system. These remarkable cells possess multifaceted functions, including both direct destruction of antigens and summoning and guiding scavenging macrophages. The thymus itself is divided into two distinct zones: the outer cortex and the inner medulla. Progenitor T cells are believed to originate in the bone marrow before migrating to seed the outer cortex. As they proliferate within this region, immature T cells gradually become immunocompetent while transitioning from cortex to medulla. At a magnification level of x1000 on a 6x7cm scale, this microscopic photograph offers us an unprecedented glimpse into one aspect of human anatomy rarely seen by the naked eye. It serves as a reminder that even at such minuscule scales, there exists immense complexity within our bodies' defense mechanisms. Captured by Science Photo Library, renowned for their expertise in scientific imagery, this print not only celebrates scientific discovery but also highlights the awe-inspiring intricacies present within our own immune systems – an ever-evolving battleground against disease and infection.
