SEM of Cinnamon tree pollen grains

Cinnamon tree pollen. Scanning electron micrograph of pollen of the Cinnamon tree Drimys winteri. The pollen is found in associations of 4 grains, known as tetrads. The grains are not pressed together closely in the tetrad. The outer wall (exine) of the grain comprises rod-like processes (bacula), fused at their tips, forming a network of ridges (muri) and surrounding a circular germinal pore. When the pollen, containing male gametes, lands on the stigma of a flower, it germinates. A pollen tube grows out of a pore, down the stigma, to the ovary. Male nuclei pass down the tube and fertilize the ovules to form seeds. Magnification: x2275 at 10x8 inch size

Cinnamon Pollen Re Production Reproductive Type

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Cinnamon tree pollen grains, as captured by a scanning electron microscope. The image reveals the unique structure and arrangement of these pollen grains, which are found in groups of four known as tetrads. Unlike tightly packed tetrads, these grains maintain some distance from each other. The outer wall or exine of each grain is composed of rod-like processes called bacula that fuse at their tips, forming a network of ridges known as muri. Within this elaborate framework lies a circular germinal pore. This pore plays a crucial role in reproduction: when the pollen lands on the stigma of a flower, it germinates and develops into a pollen tube that extends down to the ovary. Through this process, male gametes contained within the pollen tube travel towards the ovules where they fertilize them to initiate seed formation. This SEM image magnified at x2275 offers an extraordinary glimpse into nature's reproductive mechanisms. With its focus on botany and plant science, this mesmerizing photograph not only highlights the fascinating world hidden within cinnamon trees but also serves as an invaluable resource for scientific research and education.
