SEM of caterpillars hatching from eggs

Fourth of 5 false-colour scanning electron micro- graphs of caterpillars hatching from the eggs of the large white butterfly, Pieris brassicae. The micrograph shows a newly emerged caterpillar amongst eggs on the undersurface of a nasturtium leaf. The eggs are laid in large groups on the leaves of crops such as cabbage & broccoli. The caterpillars (larvae) hatch in September; they winter as pupae & emerge as butterflies in May. The young larvae feed on the cuticle of the leaf until after the first moult, when the diet expands to the whole leaf. Their voracious appetite can defoliate a crop. Magnification: x25 at 6x4.5cm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 3.36, page 63

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate world of caterpillars hatching from eggs, showcasing the remarkable life cycle of the large white butterfly, Pieris brassicae. The fourth in a series of five false-colour scanning electron micrographs, this image reveals a newly emerged caterpillar amidst a cluster of eggs on the delicate undersurface of a nasturtium leaf. These eggs are typically laid in large groups on crops such as cabbage and broccoli, posing both wonder and concern for farmers. The young larvae hatch in September and spend their winter months as pupae before transforming into beautiful butterflies come May. In their early stages, these voracious caterpillars feed solely on the cuticle of the leaf until after their first moult when they expand their diet to devour entire leaves. Their insatiable appetite can swiftly defoliate an entire crop if left unchecked. Magnified at 25 times its original size within a compact 6x4.5cm frame, this SEM image offers us an up-close glimpse into nature's miniature marvels. Referenced from MICROCOSMOS (figure 3.36) on page 63, this photograph is brought to you by Science Photo Library - an invaluable resource for all enthusiasts interested in exploring nature's wonders through stunning visuals capturing every minute detail with precision and artistry.
