SEM of a bird cherry aphid feeding on barley leaf

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM), tinted green, of a bird cherry aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (also known as Aphis avenae), feeding on a barley leaf. This species is a common economic pest, transmitting two viral diseases, yellow dwarf virus and maize leaf fleck virus, which infect crops such as oats, barley, wheat and maize. Transmission occurs when the aphid inserts its stylet & feeds on sugar stored in the leaves. Large infestations of aphids can also cause the leaves of the plant to wilt & fall. Waxy tufts on the head & body give the aphid a mealy appearance. Magnification: X 23 at 35mm size. Original is BW print Z295/051

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a bird cherry aphid as it feeds on a vibrant barley leaf. Tinted in an enchanting shade of green, this scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the hidden world of these tiny creatures that have significant implications for agriculture. Known scientifically as Rhopalosiphum padi or Aphis avenae, this species is not only visually intriguing but also poses economic challenges as a common pest. The bird cherry aphid plays a notorious role in transmitting two viral diseases: yellow dwarf virus and maize leaf fleck virus. These harmful viruses infect various crops including oats, barley, wheat, and maize. The transmission occurs when the aphid delicately inserts its stylet into the leaves to feed on stored sugars. Unfortunately, large infestations can lead to wilting and falling leaves, further exacerbating crop damage. Upon closer inspection of this SEM image, one cannot help but notice the waxy tufts adorning both the head and body of these aphids. This unique feature gives them a mealy appearance that adds to their distinctiveness within the insect kingdom. With magnification at 23 times its original size at 35mm dimensions, this black-and-white print offers us an extraordinary glimpse into nature's intricacies. It serves as a reminder of how even seemingly insignificant organisms like insects can have far-reaching consequences for our environment and agricultural systems alike.
