EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Sebastian Munster, a renowned German cartographer who lived from 1488 to 1552. Born in Ingelheim near Mainz, Munster was not only a cartographer but also held the position of professor of Hebrew at the University of Basel. He made significant contributions to academia by editing the Hebrew Bible and providing commentaries in Latin. However, his most notable achievement was his magnum opus, the Cosmographica of 1544. This groundbreaking work became the earliest description of the world written in German and gained immense popularity during the 16th century. Its influence extended far beyond Germany as it was subsequently translated into numerous languages. Tragically, Munster's life was cut short by an outbreak of plague in 1552. Despite this untimely demise, his legacy lives on through his remarkable contributions to geography and literature. The engraving featured in this print is sourced from Bezes Les vrais pourtraits des hommes illustres, printed at Geneva in 1581. It serves as a testament to Munster's intellectual prowess and enduring impact on scholarly pursuits during the Renaissance era.
