Antennae colliding galaxies, Hubble image

Antennae colliding galaxies, Hubble Space Telescope image. The Antennae (NGC 4038 and NGC 4039) are formed of two galaxies colliding due to mutual gravitational attraction. The nuclei (yellow) of the galaxies are at lower left and upper right. Numerous dark lanes of dust are seen silhouetted against the bright parts of the galaxies. The interaction has caused a huge swathe of starbirth, as seen by the abundance of young blue stars and the vast pink emission nebulae, in which stars are born. The Antennae lie some 62 million light years from Earth in the constellation Corvus. Image data collected by the Advanced Camera for Surveys in 2004 and 2005

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Antennae colliding galaxies, a mesmerizing spectacle captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. The two galaxies, NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, are locked in a gravitational dance that has resulted in their stunning collision. In this image, we can observe the nuclei of these galaxies at opposite corners - glowing with a vibrant yellow hue. The dark lanes of dust create an intriguing contrast against the bright areas of the galaxies, adding depth and mystery to this celestial encounter. This interaction between the Antennae has sparked an extraordinary burst of starbirth across its expanse. The abundance of young blue stars and vast pink emission nebulae within this cosmic tapestry bear witness to new stellar life being born amidst swirling gas clouds. Located approximately 62 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Corvus, these colliding galaxies offer astronomers invaluable insights into galactic evolution and astrophysical processes. This particular image was collected by the Advanced Camera for Surveys over multiple years (2004-2005), allowing us to marvel at every intricate detail within this galactic collision. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring photograph from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of both our insignificance in comparison to the vastness of our universe and our boundless curiosity about its wonders.
