Thomas Huxley, English biologist

Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), English biologist. Huxley was a strong advocate of Darwins theory of evolution by natural selection. He was often its main supporter in scientific debates, as Darwin shunned publicity. In 1860 Huxley presented Darwins theory at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at Oxford, where he faced an ardent opponent, Bishop Samuel Wilberfoce. Huxley won the day by confirming that humans were primates. He turned the evolution debate into one of science rather than emotion. Huxley invented the word agnostic as a means of expressing his religious beliefs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned Thomas Huxley, an influential English biologist of the 19th century. Huxley played a pivotal role in advocating for Charles Darwin's groundbreaking theory of evolution by natural selection. In an era when scientific debates were often fueled by emotion rather than reason, Huxley fearlessly championed Darwin's ideas. The image captures a momentous event in 1860 when Huxley presented Darwin's theory at a prestigious meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at Oxford. Here, he faced off against Bishop Samuel Wilberforce, a fervent opponent of evolution. With his profound knowledge and eloquence, Huxley emerged victorious by confirming that humans are indeed primates. Huxley's contribution to evolutionary biology extended beyond this historic debate. He coined the term "agnostic" to express his religious beliefs and became known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his unwavering support of Darwinism. This illustration not only pays homage to Huxley but also serves as a reminder that science should prevail over emotional biases. As we delve into this remarkable portrait, we are transported back in time to witness the intellectual prowess and determination that shaped our understanding of life on Earth. It is through individuals like Thomas Henry Huxley that progress is made possible – forever leaving their mark on history and inspiring future generations in their pursuit of knowledge.
