Satellite disposal
Satellite disposal. Computer artwork of the Terminator Tether Satellite Deorbit System in use. This system will reduce the amount of debris in low-Earth-orbit. The terminator tether is bolted to the satellite before launch and remains dormant during the life of the satellite. When commanded to deorbit the satellite, it releases a 5- kilometre-long tether that interacts with the ionospheric plasma and geomagnetic field in the Earths atmosphere. This produces the current seen running along the tether (centre right). These currents cause forces that lower the satellite over a period of weeks or months until it is vaporised in the Earths upper atmosphere

Current Destroying Destruction Disposal Future Removal Removing Satellite Computer Artwork Disposing Tether
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible technology of the Terminator Tether Satellite Deorbit System, designed to address the growing concern of space debris in low-Earth-orbit. In this computer artwork, we witness the satellite disposal process in action. Before its launch, the terminator tether is securely attached to the satellite and remains inactive throughout its operational life. However, when commanded to deorbit, a remarkable transformation takes place. The 5-kilometre-long tether is released into space and interacts with both the ionospheric plasma and Earth's geomagnetic field. The mesmerizing scene captured here displays a current running along the length of the tether, illuminating it with an otherworldly glow. These currents generate forces that gradually lower the satellite over several weeks or months until it reaches Earth's upper atmosphere. As this groundbreaking system operates silently above our planet, it effectively disposes of satellites by vaporizing them upon entry into our atmosphere. This innovative solution represents a significant step forward in tackling orbital debris and preserving our precious celestial environment for future generations. Through this thought-provoking image from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of technological advancements aimed at safeguarding our planet while exploring new frontiers beyond.
