Sastrugi snow patterns
Sastrugi snow patterns on the surface of an Antarctic ice sheet. Each element is approximately 10 metres long. These patterns are formed by particles of snow, driven by high winds, scouring the surface. The patterns can take an almost infinite variety of forms, from delicate etchings on a smooth slab of snow, to furrows and grooves up to 1 metre deep, sometimes with overhanging lips. They usually form at temperatures of -10 to -20 degrees Celsius or lower, when the snow particles are dry. Photographed in the 2005/2006 summer season

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of sastrugi snow patterns on the surface of an Antarctic ice sheet. Each element, stretching approximately 10 meters long, is a testament to nature's artistic prowess. These intricate patterns are formed by particles of snow that are relentlessly driven by high winds, delicately scouring the surface and leaving behind their sculpted marks. From delicate etchings on smooth slabs of snow to furrows and grooves up to one meter deep, sometimes adorned with overhanging lips, these sastrugi patterns can take on an almost infinite variety of forms. They typically emerge during extremely cold temperatures ranging from -10 to -20 degrees Celsius or lower when the snow particles are dry. Photographed during the 2005/2006 summer season in West Antarctica, this image captures a moment frozen in time—a snapshot of nature's deposition and meteorological dance. The white expanse serves as a canvas for these unique formations that have been shaped by wind erosion over time. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded of both the harshness and breathtaking allure found within Earth's coldest regions. It is through images like these that we gain a deeper appreciation for our planet's diverse climates and marvel at its ability to create such awe-inspiring natural wonders.
