Samuel Baker, British explorer

Samuel White Baker (1821-1893), British explorer. In 1861 Baker started on an expedition to find the source of the Nile. However, in early 1863 he met Speke and Grant, who were following the river to Egypt after finding its source. Undeterred, he continued and in 1864 discovered Lake Albert. Baker also proved that the Nile sediment came from Abyssinia. On his return to England in 1865 he received many awards, including a knighthood in 1866.
