Salmon scale, SEM

Salmon scale. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a salmon (Salmo salar) scale. Fish scales are are classified by shape. Salmon scales are known as cycloid (curve edged). As the fish grows, the scale increase in size and growth rings called circuli become visible. During cooler months of the year the scale grows more slowly and the circuli are closer together leaving a band called an annulus. By counting the annuli it is possible to estimate the age of the fish. The exposed portion of the scale (upper half) is smoother and the rings less visible. Magnification: x19 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a salmon scale under the lens of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The vibrant colors and detailed textures bring to life the fascinating world of fish biology. Salmon scales, like the one captured here from a Salmo salar specimen, are classified as cycloid due to their elegantly curved edges. As these remarkable creatures grow, their scales increase in size and reveal growth rings known as circuli. These circuli become more visible during cooler months when growth is slower, creating distinct bands called annuli. By carefully counting these annuli, scientists can estimate the age of a salmon with surprising accuracy. This technique provides valuable insights into population dynamics and helps monitor the health and sustainability of salmon populations in various ecosystems. The upper half of this particular scale appears smoother and displays less pronounced rings compared to its exposed portion below. This contrast adds depth to the image while highlighting nature's intricacies at play. With a magnification level of x19 when printed 10 centimeters wide, this SEM photograph allows us to appreciate nature's wonders on an entirely new scale. It serves as a reminder that even something as seemingly mundane as a fish scale holds secrets waiting to be discovered by those who dare to look closer.
