Russian magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power station

New type of electricity generation. View of the main hall of the Y-25 magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power station, near Moscow. A super-hot plasma, containing an electron-donating gas, is passed between the poles of a large magnet. The walls of the plasma channel act as electrodes, inducing a large direct current. This current is passed into an inverter to produce an alternating current. The hot plasma then passes through a heat exchanger, where it superheats steam. The steam is then passed through a turbine, generating more electricity. MHD power has been studied since 1960, and the Y-25 station is seen by Russia as the prototype of a 1000 million watt (1GW) plant

Electricity Generation Energy Generator Power Power Station Russia Stations

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the innovative Russian magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power station, a groundbreaking advancement in electricity generation. Located near Moscow, the Y-25 MHD power station's main hall is depicted here, offering a glimpse into this cutting-edge technology. At the heart of this revolutionary system lies a super-hot plasma infused with an electron-donating gas. This plasma is carefully guided between the poles of an imposing magnet, where the walls of its channel act as electrodes, inducing a substantial direct current. To harness this energy for practical use, it is then converted into alternating current through an inverter. The journey of the scorching plasma doesn't end there; it proceeds to pass through a heat exchanger that superheats steam. This high-pressure steam subsequently powers a turbine, generating even more electricity. The seamless integration of these processes results in efficient and sustainable energy production. Since 1960, extensive research has been conducted on MHD power systems like this one. Russia considers the Y-25 station as their prototype for future 1000 million watt (1GW) plants—a testament to their commitment to advancing clean and powerful energy solutions. This awe-inspiring photograph from Science Photo Library captures not only the physical grandeur of this MHD power station but also symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of technological progress in our quest for sustainable and efficient electricity generation.
