EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Royal College of Physicians, a historic institution located in Warwick Lane, London. The artwork depicts the courtyard of this prestigious college, which received its royal charter from King Henry VII in 1518 and became known as the Royal College of Physicians. The building depicted here is a replacement for the original structure that was lost during the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666. Designed by Robert Hooke and opened in 1675, it stands as a testament to architectural brilliance and timeless beauty. Over time, the Royal College of Physicians moved to new premises in 1799, but this enchanting engraving captures an important chapter in its rich history. Published in 1724 by John Bowles, this monochrome illustration provides us with a glimpse into England's medical society during the 18th century. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in advancing medicine and healthcare practices. With its ornate facade and classical architecture, this image exudes elegance and grandeur. It symbolizes not only an esteemed educational institution but also represents centuries-old traditions rooted deeply within British culture. Thanks to CHEMICAL HERITAGE FOUNDATION/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY for preserving this remarkable piece of art history that allows us to appreciate both architectural marvels and historical significance intertwined within one frame.
