Round-leaved sundew, Drosera

Sundew. Round-leaved sundew plants, Drosera rotundifolia. The leaves have long stalks and circular blades. Each leaf grows tentacles capped by glands which produce a sticky droplet. These droplets attract insects which then become stuck to them. The insects struggles stimulate the tentacles, which slowly bend over, further entangling it. Enzymes are then secreted which digest the soft body parts of the victim. The sundew has evolved this predatory mechanism to counter the mineral-deficiency in the soils of its natural habitat (uplands and bogs). Nitrogen in particular is obtained from the insect. Photographed on Queen Charlotte Island, Canada

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Round-leaved sundew, also known as Drosera rotundifolia. The intricate details of this carnivorous plant are beautifully captured in the image. With long stalks and circular blades, each leaf is adorned with tentacles that are topped by glands producing sticky droplets. The sundew's unique mechanism for capturing prey is truly remarkable. Insects attracted to these glistening droplets become ensnared in their stickiness. As they struggle to free themselves, the tentacles slowly bend over, further entangling them. To ensure its survival in mineral-deficient soils found in uplands and bogs, the sundew has evolved this predatory behavior. Enzymes secreted by the plant then go to work, digesting the soft body parts of its unfortunate victim. This process not only provides essential nutrients like nitrogen but also highlights nature's incredible ability to adapt and thrive under challenging circumstances. Photographed on Queen Charlotte Island in Canada, this image offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of botany and showcases one of nature's most intriguing creations – a carnivorous plant capable of luring unsuspecting insects into its clutches for sustenance. This print from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of both the beauty and complexity found within our natural world while highlighting how plants have ingeniously adapted to survive even in harsh environments through extraordinary means such as predation.
