Reproductive flower parts, SEM
Reproductive flower parts. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Bupleurum falcatum flowers. The petals (yellow) surround the anthers (brown) that are supported on filaments. An anther and filament together make up a stamen. The carpel (brown, one at top centre) consists of the visible parts of a style topped by a stigma. The ovary (not seen) is at its base. The anthers produce the pollen (male reproductive cells). If these land on the stigma of a flower, they can fertilise a female reproductive cell in the ovary. This then results in a seed for a new plant. Magnification: x9 at 6x7cm size
