Red Sea mimic blenny

Red Sea mimic blenny (Ecsenius gravieri). This harmless blenny mimics the blackfin blenny (Meiacanthus nigrolineatus), which is poisonous. By copying the shape and colouration of the poisonous blenny, which predators have learnt to avoid, the mimic blenny gains the same protective benefits. Both blennies inhabit the western Indian Ocean, and reach around eight centimetres in length. Photographed in the Egyptian Red Sea

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Red Sea mimic blenny, also known as Ecsenius gravieri. Found in the western Indian Ocean, this harmless blenny has evolved a fascinating survival strategy. By mimicking the appearance of the poisonous blackfin blenny (Meiacanthus nigrolineatus), which predators have learned to avoid due to its toxicity, the mimic blenny gains similar protective benefits. The photograph beautifully captures the intricate details of this small fish, measuring around eight centimeters in length. Its vibrant colors and unique shape closely resemble those of its toxic counterpart. This biological phenomenon is known as Batesian mimicry, where one species imitates another that possesses some form of defense mechanism. Taken in the Egyptian Red Sea, this image transports us into an underwater world teeming with diverse marine life. The clarity and precision captured by Science Photo Library allow us to appreciate every aspect of this intriguing creature's adaptation. As we admire this stunning photograph, let it serve as a reminder of nature's ingenuity and complexity. It highlights how organisms can evolve strategies for survival that are both ingenious and beautiful at once – a testament to the wonders found within our natural world.
