Red Clover pollen

Red Clover pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains of Red Clover, Trifolium pratense. The outer wall (exine) of each grain has a netted ornamentation, and there are grooves called germinal furrows. These pollen grains are wind dispersed. When a pollen grain, containing the male gametes, lands on the stigma of a flower, it germinates. A pollen tube grows out from the furrow, down through the stigma, to the ovary. The male nuclei pass down this tube, fertilize the ovules and seeds are formed. Magnification: x1, 425 at 5x7cm size. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate beauty of Red Clover pollen. Under the lens of a scanning electron microscope, the grains are revealed in stunning detail. Each grain possesses a netted ornamentation on its outer wall, giving it an enchanting appearance. Additionally, there are germinal furrows that create grooves within these tiny structures. Red Clover pollen is primarily dispersed by wind, allowing it to travel far and wide in search of its destination. When one of these grains lands on the stigma of a flower, it marks the beginning of a remarkable process. The male gametes contained within the pollen grain germinate upon contact with the stigma. A slender tube emerges from one of the furrows and extends down through the stigma towards the ovary. Within this delicate tube, male nuclei journey towards their ultimate goal – fertilizing ovules and initiating seed formation. This crucial step in reproduction ensures continuity for Red Clover plants and contributes to their proliferation across various landscapes. The magnified image presented here measures 5x7cm but reveals an extraordinary world hidden to our naked eyes. Its nature-inspired hues evoke feelings of tranquility while highlighting botany's wonders. Whether displayed for educational purposes or personal appreciation, this print serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic expression.
