EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Ramon Llull, a renowned Majorcan philosopher who lived from 1232 to 1315. In this engraving from the 17th century, Llull is depicted alongside his parents and an adorable baby, symbolizing the creation of the Philosophers Stone through the union of male and female elements. Born into wealth and receiving a comprehensive education, Llull authored numerous works on alchemy and botany. He is also recognized for his pioneering contributions to election theory. However, it is important to note that despite his intellectual achievements, Llull's religious conversion to Catholicism led him down a path of attempting to convert European Jews while harboring strong anti-Semitic sentiments. This aspect of his life cannot be overlooked or dismissed. The monochrome landscape in this photograph adds depth and enhances its historical appeal. The Spanish-German collaboration between Raymond (Ramon) Llull and Michael Maier resulted in Symbola aureae's publication in Frankfurt in 1617, which features this remarkable engraving. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this significant moment in history with their attention to detail and artistic flair. This thought-provoking image invites viewers to reflect upon both the brilliance of Ramon Llull's contributions as well as the complexities surrounding his beliefs and actions during a tumultuous period spanning across three centuries - the 14th, 13th, and even back into the 12th century when he was born.
