Quasar ULAS J1120+0641, artwork C015 / 0796

Quasar ULAS J1120+0641, artwork. The very hot extremely luminous quasar at centre of the image is very bright at ultraviolet wavelengths. This high-energy radiation from the quasar ionizes the surrounding hydrogen gas (red). Located over 28 billion light years from Earth, in the constellation of Leo, it is seen in the early history of the universe (13 billion years ago). In the background are faint compact galaxies that have just formed. The hot stars in these galaxies also ionize their surroundings (red rings), but over a far smaller volume than this quasar, a much more active object. Artwork published in 2011

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Quasar ULAS J1120+0641, a remarkable celestial object located over 28 billion light years away from Earth in the constellation of Leo. The artwork, created in 2011 by GEMINI OBSERVATORY/AURA/LYNETTE COOK/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, depicts this ancient quasar at the center of the image emitting an intense ultraviolet glow. Its high-energy radiation powerfully ionizes the surrounding hydrogen gas, creating a stunning red hue that adds to its allure. Intriguingly, this quasar provides us with a glimpse into the early history of our universe as it existed approximately 13 billion years ago. As we marvel at its brilliance and luminosity, faint compact galaxies that have just formed can be observed in the background. These galaxies contain hot stars that also emit radiation and ionize their surroundings but on a much smaller scale compared to this active quasar. The artwork not only captures the magnificence of this distant cosmic phenomenon but also highlights its significance in astrophysics and astronomy research. It serves as a reminder of our ongoing quest to understand the mysteries of space and time while showcasing both the delicate interplay between various elements within our universe and how they shape its evolution.
