Pussy willow pollen

Willow pollen. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of a pollen grain of goat willow, Salix caprea. Also known as the " pussy willow". This elongated pollen grain has a grooved and pitted surface. Its protein coat is distinctive of the willow genus (Salix). Pollen is produced by the male sex organs in flowers and dispersed to the female sex organ where the egg is fertilized. The protein coat is both highly characteristic and resistant to decay. Thanks to these properties, studies of ancient pollen like willow from deep soil samples has helped to reveal the history of European vegetation since the last ice age. Magnification: x800 at 6x6cm size

Goat Willow Pollen Pussy Willow Re Production Reproductive Salix Caprea Type Willow Salix

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of pussy willow pollen, specifically from the goat willow plant, scientifically known as Salix caprea. Under a colored scanning electron microscope (SEM), this elongated pollen grain reveals its grooved and pitted surface. The protein coat surrounding the grain is a distinguishing feature of all willow species within the Salix genus. Pollen plays a crucial role in plant reproduction as it is produced by male sex organs in flowers and dispersed to female sex organs for fertilization. Interestingly, this protein coat not only possesses unique characteristics but also exhibits remarkable resistance to decay. Consequently, ancient pollen samples found deep within soil layers have been instrumental in unraveling Europe's vegetation history since the last ice age. With a magnification of x800 at 6x6cm size, this photograph allows us to appreciate nature's microscopic wonders on an enlarged scale. Its vibrant colors and detailed textures provide insights into botany and plant science while highlighting the importance of reproductive processes in sustaining life on our planet. This extraordinary image was captured by Science Photo Library, renowned for their exceptional collection of scientific visuals that inspire curiosity and foster understanding across various disciplines such as nature, botany, and more specifically here - plants' reproductive mechanisms involving pussy willows like goat willows (Salix caprea).
