Psoriasis, light micrograph

Psoriasis. Light micrograph of a section through a psoriasis pustule. Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease causing inflammation and scaly lesions. In this section the surface of the skin (stratum corneum) is at top. There is a parakeratotic layer with abnormal keratinisation and microabcesses (upper centre) immediately below the cornified layer. Beneath this, the stratum spinosum layer of the epidermis is greatly thickened (acanthosis). This is a major feature of psoriasis. The rete pegs (sections of epidermis that protrude into the dermis) and dermal papillae (sections of dermis that protrude into the epidermis) are elongated and pronounced

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate details of psoriasis, a chronic skin disease characterized by inflammation and scaly lesions. The image showcases a section through a psoriasis pustule, revealing the complex layers of the epidermis affected by this condition. At the top of the image, we can observe the surface of the skin known as stratum corneum. Just below it lies a parakeratotic layer exhibiting abnormal keratinisation and microabcesses, indicating the presence of infection or inflammation. This layer is immediately followed by an acanthosis- greatly thickened stratum spinosum layer in the epidermis - which is one of the defining features of psoriasis. The elongated rete pegs and pronounced dermal papillae are also visible in this micrograph. These structures represent sections where both epidermis and dermis intertwine, further emphasizing how deeply psoriasis affects multiple layers of skin tissue. With its vibrant colors and exceptional clarity, this print provides valuable insights into histopathological changes associated with psoriasis. It serves as a powerful visual aid for medical professionals studying dermatology or conducting research on this challenging disorder.
