Primrose stigma, SEM

Primrose stigma. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the stigma (yellow) and style (lower left) of a primrose flower (Primula sp.). This is the top part of the female reproductive structure (carpel) of the flower. Pollen grains containing the male sex cells land on the stigma and may move down the style into the ovary (not seen). If the male cells fertilise the female sex cells (ovules) in the ovary, then the carpel may ripen to form a fruit that contains the plants seeds. Magnification: x180 at 6x7cm size

Carpel Flowering Part Parts Pistil Primrose Re Production Reproductive Sexual Stigma Style

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a primrose stigma, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The vibrant yellow stigma and delicate style are highlighted in this colored SEM image, offering a close-up view of the top part of the flower's female reproductive structure. In the fascinating world of plant reproduction, pollen grains containing male sex cells land on the stigma. From there, they may travel down the style and into the unseen ovary. If fertilization occurs between these male cells and female sex cells known as ovules within the ovary, then an exciting transformation takes place. The carpel, which is another term for this female reproductive structure, begins to ripen and eventually forms a fruit that houses seeds essential for future generations. This process represents nature's remarkable ability to perpetuate life through sexual reproduction. With a magnification level of x180 at 6x7cm size, this SEM image offers us an extraordinary glimpse into one small aspect of botany. It reminds us that even within seemingly simple flowers like primroses lies an incredible complexity waiting to be discovered. This stunning photograph from Science Photo Library celebrates both the structural intricacies found in plants and their vital role in sustaining life on our planet.
