Pre-flood rivers

Pre-flood rivers (image 1 of 2). Coloured three- dimensional computer image, based on satellite data, of three US rivers before they flooded. They are the Missouri (along centre), the Mississippi (upper left) and the Illinois (top centre). North is towards top. Bare soil, such as in the ploughed fields, is red, with water black and vegetation green. The record rainfall of summer 1993 caused the flooding. The image was produced from data collected on 14 August 1991 by the Thematic Mapper on the US Landsat 5 satellite, along with USGS terrain elevation data. For the rivers in flood see image E160/126

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning three-dimensional computer image of three prominent rivers in the United States before they succumbed to devastating floods. The Missouri River gracefully winds its way through the center, while the mighty Mississippi River dominates the upper left corner and the Illinois River commands attention at the top center. With North pointing towards the top, this colored satellite-based representation provides an awe-inspiring perspective. The image vividly portrays various elements of nature's palette. The bare soil, reminiscent of freshly plowed fields, is depicted in striking red hues. Contrasting against this vibrant backdrop are expanses of black representing water bodies and lush green vegetation that brings life to these riverine landscapes. It was during the summer of 1993 when record-breaking rainfall unleashed havoc upon these picturesque regions, leading to catastrophic flooding. This particular image was meticulously crafted using data collected on August 14th, 1991 by Thematic Mapper aboard the US Landsat 5 satellite along with terrain elevation data from USGS. As we marvel at this remarkable visual spectacle captured by Science Photo Library, let us reflect on both the beauty and power inherent in our planet's natural forces. From farming practices to meteorology and hydrology studies, this single snapshot encapsulates a myriad of disciplines intertwined within one harmonious frame – reminding us once again why Earth remains an endlessly fascinating subject for exploration and understanding.
