Two praying mantises

Praying mantises (Choeradodis rhomboidea). These specimens, from French Guiana, South America, have been preserved so that their haemolymph (body fluid) can be extracted. It has a distinctive kite-shaped shield behind the head and upper body. Mantids are sit-and-wait predators, catching prey with their large front legs. Females also consume their mates during or after mating. This and other insects are being screened in search of new antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-cancer drugs by a company called Entomed, based in Strasbourg in France. Between 1999 and 2003, Entomed analysed more than 175 novel molecules with potential medical effects

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two praying mantises, specifically Choeradodis rhomboidea species, originating from French Guiana in South America. These remarkable specimens have been carefully preserved to extract their haemolymph, which is the body fluid of insects. One can't help but notice the distinctive kite-shaped shield adorning their heads and upper bodies. Praying mantises are renowned sit-and-wait predators, employing their formidable front legs to capture prey. Interestingly, female mantises exhibit a rather peculiar behavior of consuming their mates either during or after mating. The significance of this image extends beyond its aesthetic appeal. It represents the tireless efforts of Entomed, a research company based in Strasbourg, France. Their mission involves screening various insects for potential medicinal properties such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, antivirals, and even anti-cancer drugs. Between 1999 and 2003 alone, Entomed meticulously analyzed over 175 novel molecules derived from diverse insect species with promising medical effects. This particular photograph exemplifies the crucial role that biology and entomology play in advancing our understanding of medicine. As we delve into the intricate world of these fascinating creatures through scientific exploration and preservation techniques like those employed by Entomed, we unveil new possibilities for breakthroughs in clinical research without compromising commercial interests.
