Potts disease

Potts disease. Coloured X-ray of the spine of a patient with Potts disease, or tuberculosis (TB) of the spine. The vertebrae (brown blocks) have become compacted and inflamed (red, yellow), and are pressing on the spinal cord (purple). Potts disease is characterised by the softening and collapse of the vertebrae resulting in a hunchback deformity (Potts curvature). Spinal nerves can be affected leading to paralysis (Potts paraplegia). It is a secondary disease to TB and is caused when the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis moves from the lungs to the spine. Treatment is with antibiotics and immobilisation of the spine

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the debilitating effects of Potts disease, also known as tuberculosis (TB) of the spine. The coloured X-ray reveals a distressing sight, with the vertebrae appearing as brown blocks that have become compacted and inflamed in shades of red and yellow. This compression is causing immense pain for the patient, as it presses against their spinal cord depicted in purple. Potts disease is characterized by the softening and collapse of these vertebrae, resulting in a hunchback deformity known as Potts curvature. The condition can even lead to paralysis, referred to as Potts paraplegia when it affects spinal nerves. It arises as a secondary infection to TB when Mycobacterium tuberculosis migrates from the lungs to attack the spine. To combat this painful ailment, treatment involves administering antibiotics alongside immobilization techniques for the affected area of the spine. This image serves not only as a visual representation but also highlights how medical intervention plays an essential role in managing such conditions. The photograph provides valuable insight into osteology and inflammation within our central nervous system (CNS). By examining this image closely, one can observe abnormalities within various regions like lumbar and thoracic areas while gaining knowledge about bone health and joint function. Science Photo Library presents this powerful visual aid for educational purposes only; its purpose lies beyond commercial use.
