Portrait of Joseph Jackson Lister, English optician

Portrait of Joseph Jackson Lister, English optician, born on 11th January 1786 and died on 24th October 1869. J.J. Lister developed an achromatic lens for the microscope in 1830, which inaugurated the era of modern microscopy. With this lens the image viewed under the microscope was no longer blurred by coloured " ghosts". As a result of this new clarity, Lister was the first to recognize the biconcave nature of red blood cells. J.J. Lister was the father of Lord Lister, who was famous for the introduction of antiseptic techniques into surgery
