Portrait of Girolamo Cardano

Engraving of Girolamo Cardano (1501-76), Italian mathematician and physician. Cardano was the illegitimate son of a Milanese lawyer, his birth holding back his career as a talented physician. He is best known, however, as one of the greatest algebraists of his time. He recognised both negative and complex roots of equations, and gave a general algebraic method for solving cubic equations (Cardanos solution). He was accused of plagiarism by Tartaglia, but such claims have been contested. He was also a major figure in chemical thought. He made more enemies than friends, however, including his second son who he had banished for being a youth of evil habits

Algebra Mathematician Portraits Surname C Cardano Girolamo

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable portrait of Girolamo Cardano, an influential figure in both mathematics and medicine. Born as the illegitimate son of a Milanese lawyer, Cardano's unconventional background initially hindered his career as a talented physician. However, he rose above societal constraints to become one of the greatest algebraists of his time. Cardano's contributions to mathematics were groundbreaking. He not only recognized the existence of negative and complex roots in equations but also devised a general method for solving cubic equations known as "Cardano's solution". His brilliance was not without controversy, as he faced accusations of plagiarism from Tartaglia, another renowned mathematician. Nevertheless, these claims have been fiercely debated by scholars. Beyond his mathematical prowess, Cardano also played a significant role in advancing chemical thought during his era. Unfortunately, despite his intellectual achievements, Cardano seemed to attract more enemies than friends throughout his life. Even within his own family dynamics were strained; he banished his second son due to what he perceived as immoral behavior. Science Photo Library has beautifully captured this engraving that immortalizes Girolamo Cardano's legacy. It serves as a testament to the enduring impact this multifaceted genius had on various fields of study and reminds us that true greatness often comes with its fair share of challenges and controversies.
