Portrait of Avicenna, Persian physician, born near Bukhara (now in USSR) in 980, died in Hamadan (now northwest Iran), June 1037. Avicenna was a child prodigy who became the greatest physician of medieval times. The decline of the Arabian empire into warring factions forced him into serving different masters, yet he continued to receive fame, money & opportunities to research. When Hamadan fell to a neighbouring ruler, he was obliged to serve a new master, in whose service he died during an attempt to retake the city. His textbooks on medicine were translated into Latin in the 12th century and became Europes most important medical texts until the time of Harvey

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the portrait of Avicenna, a renowned Persian physician who lived during the medieval times. Born near Bukhara in 980 (now in USSR) and passing away in Hamadan (now northwest Iran) in June 1037, Avicenna's life was nothing short of extraordinary. From an early age, he displayed exceptional intelligence and quickly gained recognition as a child prodigy. Despite living through a tumultuous period marked by warring factions within the Arabian empire, Avicenna's brilliance continued to shine. He served various masters throughout his life but never ceased to amass fame, wealth, and opportunities for research. However, when Hamadan fell under the control of a neighboring ruler, he found himself obligated to serve yet another master until his untimely demise during an ill-fated attempt to retake the city. Avicenna's impact on medicine cannot be overstated. His textbooks on medicine were translated into Latin during the 12th century and became Europe's most important medical texts until Harvey's time. This remarkable achievement solidified his legacy as one of history's greatest physicians. The Science Photo Library has beautifully captured this medieval portrait that immortalizes Avicenna's contributions to healthcare and human knowledge. It serves as a poignant reminder of how individuals like him can transcend borders and time periods with their intellectual prowess and unwavering dedication to advancing our understanding of medicine.
