Polymer films, AFM
Polymer films. Coloured atomic force micrograph (AFM) of a multi-layer thin polymer film. The outer layers (granulated) are polyethylene, the layers within these are nylon and the inner layer is of unknown composition. The crystalline pattern in the nylon is due to shear banding. Atomic force microscopy produces an image by passing a thin probe across the subjects surface. The probe is spring mounted, and is continuously adjusted to maintain a constant height above the sample. A computer then builds up an image of the surface, which can resolve individual atoms. Deflection image. Magnification: x2200 at 6x6cm size

Atomic Force Micrograph Band Banded Compound Compounds Film Films Imagery Layered Layers Materials Nylon Plastic Plastics Polyethylene Polymer Synthetic Material Thin
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of polymer films through the lens of atomic force microscopy (AFM). The multi-layer thin film, with its vibrant colors and distinct patterns, offers a glimpse into the complex composition of synthetic materials. The outer layers, characterized by their granulated texture, are composed of polyethylene. Nestled within these layers lie sheets of nylon, exhibiting a mesmerizing crystalline pattern caused by shear banding. Interestingly, the innermost layer remains shrouded in mystery as its composition is yet to be determined. Atomic force microscopy enables this image to come to life by delicately scanning the surface using a slender probe. This spring-mounted probe continuously adjusts itself to maintain a constant height above the sample while capturing minute details at an astonishing resolution that can even resolve individual atoms. With a magnification level of x2200 at 6x6cm size, this photograph allows us to appreciate the layered structure and chemical complexity inherent in polymer films. It serves as a visual testament to the remarkable advancements made in chemistry and materials science. Through this stunning portrayal captured by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into the fascinating world of polymers - compounds that have revolutionized industries ranging from packaging and electronics to medicine and beyond.
