Pollination

Pollination. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains (orange) on the stigmas (tips of the green projections) of a flower. Together with the ovary (not seen), which holds the eggs, and the style, the projection between the stigma and ovary, the stigma forms the female reproductive organ (pistil). Eventually, pollen tubes emerge from the grains. The pollen tubes contain the male gametes (sex cells). They grow down the style and into the ovary, where the tips of the pollen tubes rupture, releasing the gametes to fertilize the ovule (female sex cell) and produce seeds

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Pollination" captures the intricate process of reproduction in plants. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are presented with a mesmerizing view of pollen grains, represented in vibrant orange, delicately resting on the stigmas of a flower. The green projections that house these precious grains are none other than the stigma itself, forming an essential part of the female reproductive organ known as the pistil. As we delve deeper into this microscopic world, hidden elements such as the ovary and style come to light. While unseen in this image, they play crucial roles in plant reproduction. Eventually, pollen tubes emerge from these grains carrying male gametes or sex cells. These remarkable tubes grow down through the style and into the ovary until their tips rupture within it. The ruptured tips release their gametes which then fertilize the ovule – a female sex cell – leading to seed production. This extraordinary display showcases nature's ingenuity at its finest. Through this false-coloured SEM photograph by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into botany and biology while marveling at nature's complexity. Each spike-like grain and projection holds immense significance for plant life and ensures its continued existence through pollination.
