Pollen grain of Mimosa flower

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a pollen grain of mimosa, Acacia dealbata, about 39 micrometres across. The pollen grain contains the male gametes which fertilize the ovules in the ovary of the flowering plant to form a seed. In Acacia, pollen grains regularly associate multiples of 4 to form compound grains or polyads. The compound grain shown here is a typical example of a 16-grain association in a more or less square arrangement. There are 8 centrally placed grains (4 on top visible here & 4 below not visible) & these are surrounded by 8 peripheral grains. Magnification: x640 at 35mm size. Original is BW print B786/142

Mimosa Pollen Re Production Reproductive Type Acacia Dealbata

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a pollen grain from the Mimosa flower. Captured using a false-color scanning electron microscope, this image reveals the delicate structure and vibrant colors of this tiny reproductive element. Measuring about 39 micrometers across, this pollen grain contains the male gametes responsible for fertilizing the ovules in the ovary of the flowering plant. In Acacia dealbata, these pollen grains often associate in multiples of four to form compound grains or polyads. The featured compound grain is a remarkable example of a 16-grain association arranged in a square-like pattern. At its center lie eight grains, with four visible on top and another four hidden below. These central grains are surrounded by an additional eight peripheral ones. With a magnification level of x640 at 35mm size, this photograph allows us to appreciate nature's intricate design on a microscopic scale. Its black-and-white print emphasizes both the structural details and artistic qualities inherent in botanical specimens. This mesmerizing image serves as a testament to the wonders found within our natural world and highlights how plants like mimosa employ unique reproductive strategies for successful seed formation. It is yet another reminder that even at such minuscule levels, life thrives with complexity and purpose.
