Pollen of Chickweed flower
Pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain of the chickweed plant Stellaria media. The outer wall (exine) is decorated with ridges, blebs and spots. The circular region at centre is called the germinal furrow. It is from here that the pollen tube germinates when the grain lands on the stigma of the flower. The tube grows down through the stigma, to the ovary. The male nuclei pass down the tube, fertilize the ovules and a seed is formed. Magnification: x800 at 6x6cm size
