Polarised LM of streptomycin crystals

Streptomycin. Polarised light micrograph of crystals of the antibiotic drug streptomycin. This is an aminoglycoside type of antibiotic, a drug used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Streptomycin was discovered in the 1940s and was the first effective drug treatment for tubercu- losis (TB). It is still used to treat resistant strains of bacteria causing TB, but because of serious side-effects streptomycin has largely been replaced by other antibiotics. Streptomycin is, however, still used to treat uncommon infections such as plague, brucellosis, and glanders. It may be used with penicillin to treat endocarditis. Magnification: x25 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the polarised light micrograph of streptomycin crystals, a powerful antibiotic drug used to combat bacterial infections. Streptomycin, an aminoglycoside type of antibiotic, was discovered in the 1940s and revolutionized the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) as the first effective drug against this deadly disease. Although it is still employed to treat resistant strains of TB-causing bacteria, its usage has diminished due to severe side effects and the emergence of alternative antibiotics. Despite being overshadowed by newer medications, streptomycin remains indispensable for addressing uncommon infections like plague, brucellosis, and glanders. In certain cases such as endocarditis treatment, it can be administered alongside penicillin for enhanced efficacy. The crystal formation depicted in this image highlights the intricate nature of this pharmaceutical compound under polarised light microscopy. The magnification level at x25 reveals stunning details within these crystalline structures when printed at a 35mm size. This photograph not only captures the beauty found within scientific research but also serves as a reminder of streptomycin's significant contributions to medicine throughout history.
