Polarised LM of crystals of progesterone

Female sex hormone. Polarised light micrograph of crystals of progesterone. Progesterone is the most potent of the naturally-occurring progestogens, a class of steroid hormones. It is derived from pregnenolone, which is itself made by the action of an enzyme on cholesterol. The primary function of progesterone is to prepare the inner lining of the womb for pregnancy. It is secreted by the ovaries following the release of an egg. If this egg is fertilised, the ovaries continue to produce progesterone for four months, after which it is secreted by the placenta. Magnification: x20 at 35mm size. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © PASIEKA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the polarised light micrograph of crystals of progesterone, a vital female sex hormone. Progesterone, derived from pregnenolone through enzymatic action on cholesterol, belongs to the class of steroid hormones known as progestogens. Its primary role is to prepare the inner lining of the womb for pregnancy. The image reveals intricate crystal formations under magnification at x20 in 35mm size. Each crystal represents the potency and complexity of this naturally occurring compound. The vibrant colors and unique patterns captured by polarised light microscopy highlight its chemical composition and structure.
