Polar bear insulating hair, SEM Z927 / 0132
Polar bear insulating hair. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross-section through a shaft of an insulating hair from a polar bear (Ursus maritimus). This has revealed the hollow structure of the hair that gives it its insulating properties. The hollow in the centre of the hair contains air, which is not a good conductor of heat. This insulates the polar bear from the extreme cold of its Arctic habitat. The air also helps to prevent the hair matting, which helps the polar bear shake itself dry. The hair is also oily to repel water. Insulating hair forms a coarse outer hair layer over underhair (Z927/133). Magnification: x375 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of a polar bear's insulating hair. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the cross-section of a shaft, highlighting the hollow nature of these hairs that provide exceptional insulation properties. The central cavity within each hair contains air, which acts as an excellent insulator against the extreme cold of the Arctic habitat. Not only does this ingenious adaptation protect the polar bear from plummeting temperatures, but it also prevents matting of their fur. As they shake themselves dry, the air trapped within these hairs aids in keeping them separate and free-flowing. Additionally, to further enhance its waterproof abilities, the hair is naturally oily to repel water. The coarse outer layer formed by these insulating hairs overlays a softer underhair layer. This combination creates an effective barrier against frigid temperatures and ensures maximum thermal protection for this majestic mammal. Through magnification at x375 when printed 10cm wide, we are granted a glimpse into nature's remarkable design and how animals adapt to survive in harsh environments like the Arctic. This image serves as a testament to both scientific curiosity and appreciation for wildlife photography – capturing moments that reveal hidden wonders within our natural world.
