Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor (PRTR), aerial photograph. This site was part of the Hanford Engineer Works (or Hanford Site), on the Columbia River, in Washington state, USA. It was a nuclear production complex operated by the US government from the 1940s (as part of the Second World War Manhattan Project) to the 1960s. The DuPont Company were the prime contractors for most of the site. The PRTR site was used to research various mixtures of nuclear fuels. Most of the Hanford Site had been decommissioned by 1971. Photographed in around the 1950s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph captures the Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor (PRTR) in the 1950s, located within the Hanford Engineer Works on the picturesque Columbia River in Washington state, USA. Once a thriving nuclear production complex operated by the US government during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project, this site was primarily managed by The DuPont Company. The PRTR served as a hub for groundbreaking research on various mixtures of nuclear fuels. Its significance lies in its contribution to advancing nuclear physics and paving the way for nuclear power generation. This monochrome image showcases an industrial landscape that stands as a testament to America's scientific prowess and technological achievements during the 20th century. By 1971, most of the Hanford Site had been decommissioned, marking an end to its active role in shaping history. However, this photograph preserves a moment frozen in time when innovation thrived within these walls. As we gaze upon this historical relic, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of progress and our ability to harness energy from unconventional sources. It serves as a reminder that even amidst controversy surrounding atomic energy commissioning and environmental concerns associated with such sites, there is no denying their immense impact on our world today. This remarkable print from HAGLEY ARCHIVE / SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY allows us to glimpse into an era where science met industry head-on at one of America's most renowned research facilities - forever etching its mark on both national history and global advancements.
