Planetary spheres, 1708
Planetary spheres. This is plate 3 from the 1708 edition of the star atlas Harmonica Macrocosmica by the Dutch-German mathematician and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius (1596-1665). It shows a geocentric system, with spheres surrounding the Earth showing the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The inset diagrams show the Ptolemaic system (lower left) and Tychonic system (lower right). First published in 1660, Harmonica Macrocosmica had 30 colour plates with Latin text. This edition was published in Amsterdam by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Plate 3 from the renowned star atlas Harmonica Macrocosmica, created by the brilliant mathematician and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius. Dating back to 1708, this edition of the atlas presents a geocentric system, depicting various planetary spheres encircling our Earth. The intricately detailed image reveals the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn in their respective orbits. The inset diagrams provide further insight into two other significant systems: the Ptolemaic system on the lower left and the Tychonic system on the lower right. With its vibrant colors and Latin text accompanying each plate, Harmonica Macrocosmica was initially published in 1660 with a total of 30 plates. Published by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk in Amsterdam during an era when scientific exploration flourished across Europe; this artwork offers a glimpse into historical astronomical understanding. It symbolizes humanity's quest for knowledge about our place within the vast universe. As we observe this remarkable piece of artistry today—blending elements of history and science—we are reminded of how far our understanding has evolved since Cellarius' time. Yet it also serves as a testament to his genius as he sought to unravel celestial mysteries through his meticulous cosmological work.
