Pineapple, 16th century C013 / 7639

Pineapple. 16th-century artwork of a pineapple (Ananas comosus), here referred to in the accompanying text as a nana, from the word nanas used by the Tupi people of South America. This led to the binomial genus name Ananas. Native to South America, it is now cultivated worldwide. Artwork from Cosmographie universelle (1575) by the French explorer and writer Andre Thevet (1516-1590). This book described the history and geography of the lands in which Thevet had travelled. The two volumes and four tomes contain over 1000 pages divided into 23 books. This woodcut is from chapter XI of book XXI

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a 16th-century artwork of a pineapple, known as "nana" in the Tupi language spoken by the indigenous people of South America. The artwork is derived from Andre Thevet's renowned book, Cosmographie universelle (1575), which delves into the history and geography of the lands he explored during his expeditions. This woodcut image can be found in chapter XI of book XXI, adding to its historical significance. The pineapple, scientifically referred to as Ananas comosus, has its roots in South America but has now become a widely cultivated fruit across the globe. Its introduction to Europe was greatly influenced by French explorer and writer Andre Thevet himself. With over 1000 pages divided into 23 books, this comprehensive work provides valuable insights into various aspects of nature and culture. This monochrome illustration beautifully captures the intricate details of this tropical fruit that holds both botanical and culinary importance. It serves as a testament to the rich biodiversity found in Latin America during the Middle Ages. Displayed by MIDDLE TEMPLE LIBRARY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this print not only celebrates nature's wonders but also pays homage to historical exploration and cultural exchange between continents.
